Browsing the new and noteworthy collection at the library at Duke, I came across a potentially intriguing book, It’s So You. The book is edited by Michelle Tea, and is a compilation of 35 essays “about personal expression through fashion and style.”
I was very excited to read a myriad of perspectives on fashion, expecting some more “out-there” views on the topic of personal expression.
Although a number of the essays were quite interesting, the overarching theme of the book was a bit misleading. Much of the focus ended up being about growing up overweight, a lesbian, or a feminist. While this discussion was very interesting, I expected more focus on fashion in general. Further, there was really no way to discern this would be the tone of the book from the cover or the back.
I feel like females may be able to relate better to the book, which deals with important ethical and sociological fashion issues (exclusion of large sizes, lesbian fashion culture, and fashion as a tool for feminism).
Also, I thought it was cool that Kim Gordon (from Sonic Youth) was included.
Particularly interesting essays (to me) were Kim Gordon’s (on celebrity influences), Jill Soloway’s (which talked about the importance of intentionality), and Eileen Myles’ (which explored the logic behind fashion exclusivity).
Let me close with a few interesting quotes from the book (which I may expound upon later):
Jill Soloway (on intentionality)
I know that when I leave the house today, I will be looked at, and this is what I would like people to see
Eileen Myles (on being exclusive, but trying not to seem like it)
I’m in a rush, I’m careless, but this is a beautiful coat.
In summary, it’s an interesting read, but make sure you know what you’re getting before you pick up the book, it’s a bit hard to tell from the outset.
